Do resumes tell the whole story?
Yes, you are right most of us think that Resume do not tell the whole story, there are two aspects to this question, one is that they don't tell the whole story because people want to be short and the second is that people want to hide/lie about their experience.
Resume is like a Mirror which can be seen through both ways. Some employers do not like much of elaboration. If the resume is more pages it seams like an autobiography to them and they will simply reject on the basis of too much of experience (chances are the person has worked in various fields/ companies where he/she had different experience, but not just focused on one particular thing). On the other hand some people write short and sweet resume which is to the point, then the clients /employers feels that the person is hiding his skills or do not have enough exposure to certain areas and they are rejected for that.
What I have leant over the years is if you are looking for a particular skill for a candidate with 10 years of experience, so there is no question for writing a story as to what he/she has done in each role on daily basis, it is assumed that with this many years of experience the person has done, learnt & knows about the industry and its roles in this field.
So what should someone in similar situation do, in my humble and honest opinion your summary of skills should say it all about your experience, accomplishments, accolades and anything outstanding you did in your recent past and in the job responsibility area there should be just enough information with regards to the skills utilized so that someone reading the resume should be able to understand that, what is mentioned is the skills summary is related to which projects/ clients /employers so that they know how many years you have hands-on experience with the respective skills. You cannot write the skills summary for all the projects/employers unless you are working on different domain or role all together.
On the other hand, people who make up their respective “fake” resume, I have learnt from my experience that if you ask them specific questions or follow the lead with the corresponding technology like when it was launched and when it was actually used / implemented in the companies, we can pin them down.
Similarly there are lot of other common things in front of us which we just don’t look at and people get away with it and end of the day we loose our face in front of our team, client and everyone who think that we are not doing our job as we are suppose to do.
Let us all take care & share thoughts & experiences which will help us to be better.
I hope this helps!

AS A person who makes Resumes, I would like to share my experience here. Many of my clients ask for a sample, copy & paste and never turn up. They think that we too can do that... There is another category. They drop in. Sit for several minutes. tHINK... when they feel blank, they say have you made similar resumes, show me. I get annoyed. THen, I have to politely or bluntly, it depends. ! tell them, Leave ur resume here. I will mal it tom you in a day. But I can make only 2-3 page Resume for u. But not your 8 pg. Booklet.
